How does family psychotherapy work?
During family therapy, I prefer to work with pairs, in other words, I see two family members who are having problems and who want to improve their relationship. I meet with them in my office for one-hour sessions. My theoretical preference centres on the systemic approach, but I also use the Theraplay.
For parental coaching, I see parents who have doubts about their child-rearing methods. The sessions allow them to express how they feel about raising their children, and discuss any difficulties they are experiencing as a couple in their role as parents. We try to devise educational strategies that help them to be consistent in the parental role and listen to their child while still setting limits and assigning responsibilities that encourage a positive family life.
